Admittedly when we first told family and friends we left our jobs to build truly incredible tax software, they were speechless. They would stare at us briefly, narrowing their eyes ever so slightly, and reply with the safe, socially acceptable: “oh… that’s nice”. You can only imagine the exciting conversation that followed.
Tax software isn’t usually… ok, ever… the first thing that comes to mind when you think of startups. Probably because most startups today are focused on something very different. Usually something social—a new way to share photos, a new service to exchange 6 second video clips, or a new app to capture the low, soothing rumble of a kitten purring.
But we wanted to do things a little differently. For us, it isn’t just about what we’re building, but why we’re building it.
Every year, millions of Canadians file their taxes. But even with all the technology we have today, it didn’t seem to be getting any easier. We believe we can do better.
We believe taxes should be simple enough that most people can do it themselves. We believe that doing your taxes shouldn’t be expensive. We believe everyone is entitled to their full refund, as quickly as possible. We believe too much paper is wasted every year1.
It isn’t just about building truly incredible tax software. It’s about doing something that matters. Fixing something that’s broken. Making lives better, even if it’s only once a year.
Thank you for believing with us.
1 In 2011, the CRA estimates that approximately 1.3 million paper tax packages went unused.
