Preparing for the 2012 tax season

Mark your calendars—the 2012 tax season is quickly approaching. Here are a few important dates to keep in mind:

  • You should receive most of your tax slips, like your T4, by early March. One notable exception is the T31 which doesn’t need to be sent to you until March 31st.
  • If you are planning on contributing to your RRSP, the deadline is March 1st.
  • Generally, your tax return has to be filed on or before April 30th.
  • If you have a balance owing, it is also due on April 30th.

A comprehensive list of dates can be found on the CRA’s website.

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to update your personal information with the CRA and sign up for direct deposit so you can get your tax refund with less waiting, less hassle, and less paper. The CRA offers an online service called My Account that makes this really easy to do.
