Happy new tax year!

With new year’s eve behind us, it’s time for something even more exciting: a fresh new version of SimpleTax, ready for tax season.

Beyond the necessary tax changes, we spent a lot of time this summer focusing on the little things. We looked at what could be made simpler, where people got stuck, and how we could do better. Here are just a few of our favourite improvements:

We replaced clunky pronouns—like him or her, he or she, this child, and your partner—with real names. It’s a small, friendly touch that makes things easier to read.

Our optimizers are even smarter. Last year, they had a singular focus: to maximize your refund—even if one partner ending up owing money. Our improved algorithms now prevent that from happening if the total refund amount remains the same.

Our search box got a face lift to make it easier to find. Not sure what to add or afraid you might have missed something? We’ve got you covered with improved suggestions based on your tax situation.

If you need to make a change to your return, SimpleTax can now compare your current return to what was submitted to the CRA. No more manual line-by-line comparisons.

For those using SimpleTax on a tablet or mobile device, we’ve streamlined the interface in portrait mode and added the ability to view your tax documents as you go.

All this is just scratching the surface. There are improved carry-forwards, reworked foreign tax credits, the option to get your notice of assessment online via My Account rather than through the mail, and more.

The end result is an amazingly powerful product that’s still a snap to use.

SimpleTax 2014 will be available early January. Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to be one of the first to know when it’s ready.
